Dana Point Coastal Arts Launches “Dinner with the Artist”

Dana Point April 8, 2005

The first of a series of special events was kicked off Friday night at the new headquarters and gallery of Dana Point Coastal Arts. Dubbed, “Dinner with the Artist” the events feature a sit-down dinner in an artist’s studio/gallery with a presentation by the artist about their work. The dinners, which are limited by how many people can fit in the artist’s studio, are meant to offer a more intimate look at how an artist creates their work that a traditional gallery opening or lecture.

The first event featured the work of Dana Point painter and photographer Cliff Wassmann, known for his large format prints and local oil paintings. Wassmann explained how his work developed from impressionist/surrealist work to the highly detailed photorealist imagery he now paints and how that his photography grew out of his need for quality images to create his paintings from.

Wassmann, who is now President of Dana Point Coastal Arts, also introduced the group’s members to the new space in town center. After moving his studio into the building over 10 years ago, other artists and art related businesses moved into the building. The entire bottom story of the building which is located at 34118 Pacific Coast Hwy. is now all art-related and the tenants have banded together and branded the building the “Dana Arts Plaza” Regularly scheduled receptions and art happenings are planned for the coming months. Wassmann’s hopes that by seeing the energy and enthusiasm of his building, it will inspire the city and surrounding property owners to improve the area. “This block is exactly what the city is looking for when it comes to a re-vitalized town center. Unfortunately, the area surrounding us is so blighted that we face an uphill battle trying to get people to get out of their cars and stop by. We really need to have some cooperation to improve this area”, says Wassmann.
